Lansing McLoskey wins Barlow for Guerilla Commission

Lansing McLoskey won a prestigious award from the Barlow Endowment for New Music for his new opera “The Captivity of Hannah Duston”. We are thrilled to be working with him on this piece!

The opera tells the true story of Hannah Duston, an early American woman who’s abduction from the town of Haverhill, MA (where our own Aliana de la Guardia and Mike Williams live!) and violent escape from Native Americans was once revered, but over decades became viewed with increasing suspicion. The opera is based on narratives by Cotton Mather, John Greenleaf Whittier, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau, and told Rashomon-like, each of the four retellings contradict & undermines the others in a way that foreshadows the upheaval of contemporary revisionist politics.

We’ll present this opera in the 2020-2021 season, dates TBA!
